Jove – CDE   (Deglman 08.08.04)

Description

This is the computer used for handling the TO virtual desktop (Common Desktop Environment). Along with the desktop itself, Jove currently runs Netscape. The hard drive is physically located in the control room cabinet.

Procedures

Opening Desktop:

When logging onto Jove, use Common Desktop Environment (CDE).

Log in as “guider”.

Enter password.

The following open automatically:

Jove xterm’s – (monitors 0 and 1)

Console   (monitor 2)

xcpustate – (monitor 0 only) Shows the amount of Jove CPU usage

xclock – (monitor 0 only) Shows the UT time and date

Virtual Desktop – (all 4 monitors) has 4 panels by default

Right mouse click menu options:

Titled “Workspace” this feature reads the file .openwindow, which tells it where to further look, for tailored scripting to conveniently bring up needed programs. The bottom 6 entries of Program, Utilities, Properties…, Workstation Info…, Help…, and Exit… are standard UNIX options.

Desktop layout:

For Ops Eng and especially for Night Ops, the following programs should be brought up and in the positions indicated:

Monitor/Panel                                         Software

                1                              2                              3                              4

0              Smoke-PMC            Sams-SAMS              Jove-Netscape          VNC-Dimm

Note: due to GUI display problems, monitor 3 (far right) is dedicated solely to TCS.

Note: due to ximtool having 8-bit color, it must be brought up on monitor 1. Also, do not open other color-thief programs, especially Super Mongo on this monitor.

Right click on root background – chose “Netscape 4.79”.

Opening VNC’S:

DIMM VNC

Frijole, Sandmann, & Wave VNC’s

Being that these screens are now accessible via the KVM, they no longer need be brought up on the Jove Desktop. However, should you so choose, they are accessed in the same manner as the Dimm VNC.

Notes: Watch for color allocation problems. To avoid this, open VNC’s after most other windows.

Problems

If the color of a GUI (PMC, etc) on the desktop is screwed up.

Opening a VNC, Super Mongo, and sometimes Netscape) first will interfere with certain GUI's colors.

close both that GUI and the culprit (VNC, sm, Netscape, etc.)

reopen the GUI first then the VNC.

note: sm causes problems w hgdr (ximtool 8-bit color) even if opened later
