HET OPERATIONS ENGINEER MANUAL:  INTERIOR VISUAL INSPECTION (REV: 08.08.04)

INTERIOR VISUAL INSPECTION

General Description:

Perform a visual inspection of the interior of the HET.  Open exhaust fan covers (if required) and prepare the surface of the pier for structure use.  Restart the SPS software.  Inspect the spectrograph room, lower and upper electrical rooms, and the mezzanine area.

1.0     Within the dome, inspect the floor area to the exterior of the pier.

1.1     Check the floor for obstructions, fallen and/or broken parts, and anything that is unusual or out of place.

1.2     Also, check that the door that separates the viewing windows from the GTAG is shut.

1.3     Visually note the approximate position of the tracker. Unless you are notified otherwise, the tracker should be centered.

2.0     Normally the exhaust fans are not operated in conjunction with the ring wall ventilation louvers. However if required, open the five exhaust fan covers by pushing a switch on the right side of the fan cover support frame.  Exhaust fan 11 is used for ventilating the JLG only, so its cover is not opened.

3.0     Sweep the pier.

3.1     Sweep the top surface of the pier using a special mop.  The mop is found to the right of the dome bay door hanging on a support girder.

3.2     Look for gouges in the surface of the pier as it is swept.  These need to be filled by the day staff.

4.0     Inspect the floor to the interior of the pier.

4.1     Inspect the floor, including underneath the cable wrap, for glycol puddles, fallen parts and anything else that does not belong.

4.2     Look to be sure that there are no cables or lines or any other foreign object that can become entangled in the three position encoders of the structure.

5.0  Inspect the lower and upper electrical rooms and the mezzanine area.  Make sure all lights are off if not  in  use.

6.0  Visually confirm tracker is in home position. (centered)

 Fault Conditions and Solutions:

A)      Notable glycol puddles and/or leaks are found.

1)       Call and/or send email to the appropriate day staff and notify them of the problem.
