HET
OPERATIONS ENGINEER MANUAL: AIR STARTUP (REV:080804)
PRECAUTIONS:
A) Keep
in mind at all times that you are working with a pressurized system.
B) Due
to excessive noise you may wish to wear ear protection.
C) Make
sure the tracker air isolation valve is open.
This valve should always be left open.
General
Description:
Start
the Quincy air Compressor in the Krabbenhut. This compressor feeds to the structure lift
system.
See
Appendix A: HET Air System Operations
for a detailed explanation of the air system.
Initial
Conditions:
A)
Quincy Compressor has been shut down.
B)
Red ‘Stop’ button on the Quincy Compressor control panel is pushed in.
C)
Valve to the Air Dryer is closed.
1.0
Check system state.
1.1 Check the items listed in
the Initial Conditions section above to make sure the system is in the proper
state.
1.2 Check the levels on the
three snap traps hanging by the Dual-Tower Desiccant Air Dryers.
They should not be more then half full. Do not
attempt to drain.
.
2.0
Start the Quincy compressor.
2.1 Test the compressor fault
lights on the control panel diagram by pushing in the white button. All five lights should illuminate.
2.2 Gently rotate the red stop
button clockwise until it pops out.
2.3 Push the green button to
start the compressor. In cold weather
the filter light may be on during startup but it should go out approximately
one minute after the compressor has started.
2.4 Verify the compressor
discharge pressure and discharge air temperature increase.
2.5 While the compressor is
running, check for oil flow in the horizontal sight glass on the top of the
tank. There should be a small amount of
flow in the sight glass.
3.0
Start the air dryer.
3.1 Once the discharge pressure
has risen to approximately 100 psi or 750 kpa, go to the air dryer and slowly open the large dryer
outlet valve until it is completely open.
3.2 Start the dryer by pressing
the black button on the box below. In
about eight seconds one of the towers will blow down.
3.3 Verify that there is no
indication of moisture in the particulate filter sight glass near the isolation
valve.
Fault
Conditions and Solutions:
A)
1)
The system is already pressurized.
Repeat steps 3.1 – 3.2 above. The
compressor should start.
2)
The pressure sensor has become clogged.
Call a member of the day staff to check and/or clean the pressure
sensor.
B)
1)
The phase protection has tripped off so that the compressor will not
run. This is mainly a cold weather
problem. To fix,
turn off the large breaker marked “Quincy Air System” at the left side of the
entrance door, then turn the breaker on again.
This resets the controller electronics.
2)
If the unit continues to trip out, use the portable air compressor
located outside (during the winter months).
Otherwise call the appropriate day staff.
Method for System Shutdown
A)
In the Krabbenhut go to the air dryer and
slowly pull the yellow valve handle down so that it is in a horizontal
position. On the control box, directly
below the valve, push the red button.
These actions initiate a shutdown sequence that will turn the compressor
off. After about 15 minutes, the compressor will
shutdown. Push in the big red button on
the compressor main control panel, located below the start button. This concludes the shutdown procedure.
