MRS Configurations

MRS_Mode_Camera_Echelle_CrossDisp_Wavelength_Fiber_#SkyChop_Filter_Slit_Mask_Binning_File
Mode = DF, LS, MOS
  • DF: The direct feed mode
  • LS: The fiber synthetic long slit mode
  • MOS: The multi-object spectroscopy mode
    NOTE: DF is the only mode available for queue observations in 2003-2
Camera = Vis, JCAM, both
  • Vis: The visible beam only
  • JCAM: The NIR beam only using the JCAM system with Hawaii I NIR array
  • both: Simultaneous expose both Vis and JCAM
    NOTE: Vis is the only mode available for queue observations in 2003-2
Echelle = 79, 110
  • 79: The 79 line/mm echelle
  • 110: The 110 line/mm echelle
    NOTE: 79 is the only mode available for queue observations in 2003-2
CrossDisp = 220, 600, 900, 1200
  • 220: The 220 line/mm cross-disperser grating, blazed at 5900Å
  • 600: The 600 line/mm cross-disperser grating, blazed at 6500Å
  • 900: The 900 line/mm cross-disperser grating, blazed at 5150Å
  • 1200: The 1200 line/mm cross-disperser grating, blazed at 5600Å
    NOTE: 220 is the only mode available for queue observations in 2003-2
Wavelength
    Center wavelength in Angstroms for cross-disperser on CCD
    NOTE: This will be 7000 for queue observations in 2003-2
Fiber = 1.5Rs, 1.5Bs, 2.0R, 2.0B
    For the DF mode there are four choices.
    The two 1.5 arcsec modes yeild R~7000 and the two 2.0 arcsec modes yield R~5000
  • 1.5Rs: An object-sky pair of 300 micron core (1.5 arcsec on sky) FIP fibers separated by about 10 arcsec
  • 1.5Bs: An object-sky pair of 300 micron core (1.5 arcsec on sky) FVP fibers separated by about 10 arcsec
  • 2.0R: A single (i.e. object only) 200 micron core (2 arcsec on sky) FIP fiber
  • 2.0B: A single (i.e. object only) 200 micron core (2 arcsec on sky) FVP fiber
#SkyChop = #
    This is an integer number that specifies the number of object-sky switches to be done. Each exposure will be the total exposure time in the Phase II exposure line divided by the #
  • 1: One exposure of specified length with object in default fiber
  • 2: If using 1.5R or 1.5B, do second exposure of specified length with object moved to sky fiber in first exposure.
    If using 2R or 2B, object moved off fiber for second sky only exposure
  • 3: etc.
Filter = TBD
  • 0: For all DF expsoures there is a hardwired filter. It is a Schott type OG455 for the "R" fibers and a WG305 for the "B" fibers. One should be aware that there will be XD second order overlap beyong 9000 Å for the "R" fibers. There is the potential for XD second order overlap beyond ~7500 Å for the "B" fibers depending on the blue spectral energy distribution of the target.
    There will be up to six filter options to be defined when in the LS or MOS mode
  • 1: TBD
  • 2: TBD
  • 3: TBD
  • 4: TBD
  • 5: TBD
Slit = 0, 100, 200, 300, 600
    Specifies the slit width selected in microns
  • 0: Only option in DF mode
  • 100:
  • 200:
  • 300:
  • 600:
Mask = 0, 100, 200, 300, 600
    Specifies the slit height at the spectrograph input in mm in one of three positions: upper (U), center (C), lower (L)
  • 0: Only option in DF mode
  • 5.0U:
  • 15.0C:
  • 3.0C:
  • 5.5L:
Binning
    This specifies the CCD binning requested
  • 2x2: Default in DF mode until further notice
  • Options to be defined in LS or MOS mode
File = none, filename
  • none: The default at present
  • Will be necessary in the future to detail the position of fiber probes for MOS spectrscopy of guide probes for DF and LS modes
